The California Product Stewardship Council is a non-profit corporation supported by dozens of local governments and government entities who have pledged to support the CPSC Mission:
 To shift California’s product waste management system from one focused on government funded and ratepayer financed waste diversion to one that relies on producer responsibility in order to reduce public costs and drive improvements in product design that promote environmental sustainability.
By partnering with producers, we focus on the part of the supply chain where products are designed and manufactured. We believe that by making better choices in the early stages of a product’s life, we can reduce the environmental impact of product waste. By diverting products from the waste stream, we conserve our natural resources and ultimately reduce the demand on our landfills. The CPSC’s goal is to align public and private sectors through information, advocacy and legislation to ensure ongoing product responsibility from design to disposal.
CPSC's specific purposes are to:
- Build capacity and knowledge among local governments, and build relationships with stakeholders, to bring about producer financed and managed systems for product discards, including, but not restricted to, products covered by the Universal Waste Ban.
- Provide a forum for the exchange of information regarding existing and proposed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs.
- Develop and recommend practical local and statewide EPR policy and educational tools such as model ordinances and legislation, newsletters, articles, policy briefings, etc.
- Provide effective leadership on EPR initiatives in California and develop a prioritized list, with timelines, of future EPR programs.
- Educate elected and appointed officials and other decision makers on the benefits to local government of EPR.
